Well, at least they've gotten as far as the CGI. That's a step.
The classic cry that the future isn't as promised is "Where's my flying car?"

Maybe it's here.

(Although I'm not holding my breath.)

On the other hand, with my luck, the simple fact that I no longer work next to a runway may greatly increase the chances that a successful flying car will be marketed.

Most current aircar designs are VTOL or VSTOL, so you wouldn't need to "work next to a runway." The accommodation challenge would be setting up parking lots designed with landing pads; the car could then taxi to a parking spot.

So you get something that doesn't fly as well as a Cessna and doesn't drive as well as a Miata for two to three times the combined cost of the car and plane. They've been built before but never sell enough to cover development costs. Same reason lots of people own a boat and tow it on a trailer but won't buy an amphibious car.

This is the most logical explanation of why flying cars have never taken off (so to speak).
